Give the Gift of Experience (Samba Days)

Summer is the time for holidays, fun and for many of us, its wedding season.

Guests need to consider the all-important gift. But is a cocktail shaker and set of martini glasses the right choice for your bestie? Does it feel right to buy your cousin a place setting of fine china when you know she doesn’t cook?

Samba Days, an experiential gift website, offers suggestions that won’t gather dust on the shelf.Created by Alex Barseghian, Samba Days offers up experiences instead of things. The website sells gift boxes aka gift cards which are related to different offerings such as wine, life and culture, gourmet, getaway, body and soul and adventure.

Barseghian was attending a wedding in England when he found out about Red Letter Days, and decided to create a similar concept in Canada. Launched in 2008, the website currently offers 500 experiences and will be adding 300 more this Fall.

Friends or family choose the dollar amount they want to spend on the wedding present and choose a theme – the recipients choose from 75 offerings based on location and interest. “We’ve found that 70 per cent of gift-givers are wrong when they suggest what the recipients will ultimately choose,” explained Barseghian. “Having this option gives the chance to give someone a great memory and let them choose something they really want.” The most popular choices are Gourmet Getaway ($329), Action & Adventure ($299) and Table for Two ($99).

Examples of unique wedding presents include pilates classes, spa treatments, winery tours, overnight packages at boutique hotels or inns or for those wanting a thrill: hang gliding, flight lessons or zip-lining. Many of the packages are 10-40 per cent less than standard price, but Samba Days isn’t a deal website says Barseghian.

“Samba Days is about offering something different – an experience that will be remembered for a very long time.”
