The True Cost of Alcohol in Ontario

The Canadian Taxpayer Federation reveals that the LCBO (that’s the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the government monopoly on booze) pays $5.52 for a bottle. This includes the distillers production, delivery costs and profit. The first hit is federal excise – $3.51, then LCBO mark up – $12.72, then a $0.29 bottle levey and a $0.09 environmental levy. We are now at $22.12! Next 13% HST – $1.11 for GST and $1.77 for PST. Total $25.00 more than 400%  than original cost.

Would you like that in a bag? Another 5 cents!
